While losing weight is as difficult as it can get, putting on weight is equally easier. Even while following certain diet restrictions, some people put on weight because they consume more calories than they actually burn through everyday bodily functions and physical movements. 

In some cases, weight gain might not be a big issue to be dealt with, but in majority of the cases, weight gain might be due to an underlying health condition which is often being neglected. 

Below are some of the reasons why you might be experiencing an unknown weight gain:

  • Underactive Thyroid – An underactive thyroid is usually a case wherein your thyroid gland is unable to produce  enough thyroid hormones. This in turn slows down the metabolism of the body, thus causing weight gain. It can occur at any age or any gender, but older women are more likely to experience this. 
  • Diabetes Treatment – For people suffering from Diabetes, weight gain is a common factor they go through because of the daily intake of Insulin which helps in controlling blood sugar levels. Snacking beyond control when in diabetes can lead to extreme weight gain. 
  • Ageing – As you age, you tend to lose muscles because you become less active. Muscles are helpful in burning calories, so a lot of muscle mass can mean burning of more calories. While growing older, if you lose more muscle by being physically inactive, you will more likely end up gaining weight. Avoid this by practising physical workout and exercise regularly. 
  • Cushing’s Syndrome – This particular syndrome is very rare which is caused by the hormone cortisol. It can be developed as a long term side effect if you have sort of tumour. 
  • Stress – Different types of people react differently to stress, anxiety and depression. Some people might eat less and not look after their diet, while there are some who might endlessly gain weight due to stress-eating. Weight gain caused due to stress of depression can make you more stressed, thus causing weight gain further. 
  • PCOS – Due to the current change in the lifestyle, PCOS has become a common disorder experienced by many. While the underlying cause of PCOS is usually occurs due to several changes in the hormones including insulin and testosterone, sedentary lifestyle, including more of processed foods. Symptoms of PCOS include irregular periods, growth of excess hair on face, trouble in pregnancy and weight gain. People suffering from PCOS are likely to gain weight around waist. 

Gaining  weight can depending on various other factors. So its best to see your physician or a healthcare provider to find the root cause of the weight gain.
